“Philippines has a new star of energy efficiency!”
Under the Urban Concept Category, Battery-Electric Energy Type, Kislap, the energy-efficient car of Team University of the Philippines (UP) swept past four other contenders from different countries, on the Shell-Eco Marathon Asia (SEMA) 2015, held in Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park, Manila, February 26 to March 1.
Kislap, powered by lithium-ion cells, posted a mileage of 40.5km/kWh and bested teams from De La Salle University and Adamson University, Philippines; Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and Dhurakij Pubdit University, Thailand.
“I believe the soundness of our vehicle's core design is what carried us through the competition,” said Ms. Alyssa Tuñgol, Team Manager of Team UP and a senior student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME). In addition, Kislap is said to be “equipped with the necessary design and safety features (mechanics and electronics) to be convertible into a commercially viable vehicle.”
“There is still a lot that we can improve about the car, and we may have been the only team out of five in our category to post a valid run; but I believe that Team UP's win is a testament to the strength of our car's design and to the dedication of our members,” she added.
Team UP is composed of 49 students; 19 of which from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) and 30 students from DME. Team leaders for the electronics and mechanics aspect of Kislap development are Mr. Martin Reyes III and Mr. Junji Lidasan, respectively. Faculty advisers of Team UP are Prof. Joseph Gerard Reyes of DME and Engr. Gaudan Chekov Castillo of EEEI.
According to the Team UP’s facebook page, the team is geared towards not only winning in the SEMA but also in continuously developing technology which would “help boost the Philippines’ electric vehicle industry.”
Team UP’s Kislap is co-funded by the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO). Last March 13, the MERALCO hosted a lunch with the Team UP and MERALCO executives to celebrate the recent winning, held in the Lighthouse, MERALCO, Ortigas, Pasig City. Kislap was also showcased in the Rev UP: The 20th UP Diliman Motorshow on March 15, and in the UP-EEEI Building Inauguration on March 19.
The SEMA serves as an avenue for students to “design, build, and test energy efficient vehicles by posting the highest mileage with the least amount of energy.” Over 133 teams from 130 Asian countries competed in this year’s SEMA.
Team UP also won 4th place under Urban Concept Category- Battery Electric on SEMA 2012; and 5th place under Urban Concept- Internal Combustion, and Urban Concept- Diesel Award on SEMA 2011.
