Four distinguished alumni of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) received awards on the 66th UP Alumni Engineers (UPAE) Homecoming, on Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman, November 15, 2014.
Dr. Luis M. Alarilla, Jr. and Engr. Rafael Nestor “Chicho” V. Mantaring received the Professional Degree Achievement Award for Computer Engineering, and for Electronics and Communications Engineering, respectively. Dr. Alarilla (BS EE 1966) is a retired full professor of the UP-EEEI and has devoted his entire professional life to the UP College of Engineering. Engr. Mantaring (BS EE 1978), on one hand, has over 30 years of combined experience in the academe and industry. He is currently the head of Design and Development for Asia, Integrated Micro-Electronics, Inc.
Another alumnus, Engr. William L. Tiu Lim, received the National Achievement Award for his entrepreneurial contributions. Engr. Tiu Lim (BS EE 1972) is actually the president of the Mega Fishing Company. On one hand, Dr. Rufino S. Ignacio (BS EE 1963) was recognized as a Global Achievement Awardee for his contributions on Engineering Consultancy. He served as the dean of the College of Engineering in the Mindanao State University (MSU), and became the vice president of the same university.
The UPAE Homecoming 2014, with the theme, “Bringing out the hero within,” served as a convention of more than 400 alumni engineers who are “heroes” in their respective professions. The event recognized a total of 85 distinguished alumni engineers; 60 of which are jubilarians and 25 awardees.
Based from the UPAE awards criteria, the Professional Degree Achievement Award is given to the outstanding alumnus/alumna who have excelled in his/her respective field of profession/career. Also, s/he must have attained national and even international recognition in the particular field for which s/he has been nominated. On one hand, Achievement Awards (e.g. National and Global) are given to alumni who have made outstanding accomplishments in areas of endeavor related to engineering field, thereby contributing to the development and improvement of the profession. Particular awards under this category may vary depending on the nominations received by UPAE.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio L. Singson, who is also an alumnus, served as the keynote speaker of the homecoming.
Masters of the ceremony were Engr. Joseph Gerard Reyes of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) and Engr. Enrico Nera of the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering (DMMME).
