Four alumni receive awards on UPAE Homecoming 2015

Four distinguished alumni of the UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP EEEI) were recognized during the 67th UP Alumni Engineers Homecoming (UPAE), held at the Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman, on 7 November 2015.

Dr. Allan C. Nerves and Dr. Manuel C. Ramos, Jr. received the Professional Degree Award in Electrical Engineering and Professional Award in Electronics and Communications Engineering, respectively. Dr. Nerves (BSEE ‘82) dedicated his professional life in the academe, as a professor in the UP EEEI. In addition, he is a member of the Rules Change Committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED)’s Technical Committee for the EE programs.

Dr. Ramos (BS EE, ‘91) was awarded for his “key advocacy to address the digital divide in the country’s rural areas through [wireless] connectivity.” Apart from being a professor in UP EEEI, Dr. Ramos was also a lead technical consultant on automated counting machines for the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and represented UP in the COMELEC Advisory Council from 2007 to 2010.

Another alumnus, Engr. Gerardo P. Villacorta, Jr. (BS EE ‘73), was recognized as National Achievement Awardee in Entrepreneurship for his experiences as a successful entrepreneur in the field of electrical and electronics communications. He was noted for the startups he founded and services he provided “to major telecommunications companies, broadcast companies, and power utilities such as PLDT, SMART, Globe, ABS-CBN, GMA-7, and several independent power producers (IPPs).”

The National Achievement Award in Corporate Governance was awarded to Engr. Carlos Antonio M. Berba (BS EE ‘86) for his exceptional contributions as Managing Director of San Miguel Brewing International since 2008. He is responsible for the “beer manufacturing in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand. Vietnam, and Cambodia; for licensing operations in Nepal and UK; and for export operations to 40 markets worldwide, with Japan’s Kirin, Spain’s Mahou-San Miguel, Denmark’s Carlsberg, UK’s Shepherd Neame, New Zealand’s Lion, and the US’ Boston Brewing.”

According to the UPAE awards criteria, the Professional Degree Achievement Award is given to the outstanding alumnus/alumna who have excelled nationally/internationally in his/her respective field of profession/ career. On one hand, Achievement Awards (e.g. National and Global) are given to alumni who have made outstanding accomplishments in areas of endeavor related to engineering field, thereby contributing to the development and improvement of the profession. Particular awards under this category may vary depending on the nominations received by UPAE.

This year’s homecoming, with the theme “Engineering Heroes Giving Back” also served as the official launching of the UPAE Study Now Pay Later project. This loan program, which aimed to support financially-challenged students, was made possible by the funds gained from golf tournaments organized by the UPAE.
