UP-EEEI research wins Best Paper Award at 7th AUN/SEED-Net Intl’ Conference on EEE

A research paper from the UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP-EEEI) won one of the Best Paper Awards in the 7th ASEAN University Network-Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

The conference was held on November 12 to 13, 2014, at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Kuala Lumpur. The paper entitled, “Automatic Tuning of a 2.45 GHz Rectangular Slotted Waveguide Antenna (SWA)”, garnered one of Best Paper Awards out of 47 research papers from Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam. The authors of the paper are Mr. John Leur D. Labrador, Ms. Elaine L. Ramos, Mr. Leonard Bryan B. Paet, Mr. Siegred D. Balon, Ms. Doreena Karmina A. Pulutan, and Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano.

The paper describes the “automation of the final tuning process of an SWA to achieve low Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) throughout the entire antenna operating range of 2.4-2.5 GHz.” The end product of the research is an Automatic Antenna Tuner (AAT) that “sets the VSWR response at an appropriately low level over the entire frequency range of operation.”

When asked about the importance of the research, Dr. Marciano said that antenna is a “critical block in a wireless communication system,” and its performance would be affected by any degradation on it. “And to do that [tuning] consistently in a manufacturing setting and to speed up the process, you would like to automate it rather than do it manually,” he added.

SEED-Net, which is mainly supported by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and partially supported by the ASEAN Foundation, is an autonomous sub-network of AUN which aims to promote “human resources development in engineering in ASEAN.” The AUN/SEED-Net Conferences serve as platform for the 26 leading member institutions (MIs) to share and collaborate technology innovations and research from their respective countries.

The UP-EEEI shall be hosting the 8th AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference on EEE, which is tentatively scheduled on November 16-17, 2015.
