The UP-Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP-EEEI) won the Gold Award for Research and Development, in the ASEAN ICT Awards 2014.
Dr. Rowel Atienza and Ms. China Yu attended the awarding ceremony at the Thai Royal Navy Hall, Bangkok, Thailand, January 22, 2015. The winning research, entitled “3D Gestures on 2D Screens,” looked into improving the gaming experience by replacing “2D screen sensor data with depth based on context of interaction using elements within the app.”
UP-EEEI won against the Vietnam Cyberspace Security Technology, JSC; and East Innovation Company Limited in Thailand, which placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
The research is funded by the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD). Other members of the research team are Mr. Nicanor Valdez, Mr. Ronnie Besas, Mr. Joel Casimiro, Mr. Andrei Lean Karlo Blanco, and Ms. Donna Dumalaon.
The Research and Development category of the ASEAN ICT Awards looks for “any information and communications technology (ICT) research and creation that discover or invent new knowledge, processes, product, and services that meet the demands of the market.” The product or creation should be (a) completed but not yet marketed; (b) less than a year of its product completion; and (c) owned solely by the creator(s)/company (Intellectual Property Rights).
The ASEAN ICT Awards is a project of the ASEAN Telecommunication Ministers which aims to “be the benchmark for success in terms of innovation and creativity, offering business opportunities and promote trade relations thus uplift the strength of ICT and community awareness in ASEAN both locally and international region.” Top three winners for each category came from shortlisted nominees. Other categories include Public Sector, Private Sector; Corporate Social Responsibility; Digital Content; and Start-up Company.
